Toshiba REGZA 46XV645U

I had Toshiba 46XV645U for about 2 weeks now. it replaces an existing tube tv (also toshiba). got this from best buy when they had it on sale for 1099. delivery was straightforward with original packing. tv came already assembled on the stand inside the box -- all you have to do is lift and set it on your tv stand.
standard definition (SD) channels look ok -- imo, all TVs (lcds, plasmas) should be able to produce SD signals as good as tube TVs. it's like software being able to support earlier versions.
HD channels look very good but I just don't think there're enough of them out there yet.

Gateway M-6888U

Bought this as a graduation present, so I went through it to test gateway m-6888u out and remove all the trialware (which thankfully there isn't that much of)...and came away very impressed.

The main selling point for me was the ati HD 2600 video card which has surpassed my expectations so far! I installed the newest Prince of Persia which ran very good at max details and default resolution (1200 x 800), and the new Wolverine game also ran great and was fun with the xbox 360 controller. Then the real test came : Fallout 3...it was running great at medium details so I decided to see what happened at the highest detail settings. to my surprise it only took a little tweaking of the view distance and Aniso filtering (dropped it to 4x) and AA (off or 2x) to get it to run smoothly even in the outdoor areas.

With the core 2 duo processor at 2ghz and 4gb of ram it obviously is able to handle most everyday tasks (word, powerpoint, etc..) with ease. The battery life seems decent so far...a few hours per charge, except for gaming (when obviously the hardware is running at max performance) which will drain the batt much quicker.

52XBR9 arrived today and I connected it tonight. I am very impressed. This is not my first HDTV. It replaces a 34-inch Sony WEGA tube-based high-def television that I bought in 2003, and I have an XBR6 in another room.

Picture quality is very good. I'm not an expert and won't quibble about technical details. All I know is that I can see the makeup on the news anchor's face, and I can examine his dental work. That's probably more than I really need to see :-) A baseball flying across Busch Stadium looks like a baseball - not like something from the Hubble telescope. The picture seems to pop out into the room, and that effect is enhanced by the TV's narrow frame.

Sound quality is also very good. I use a separate speaker and amp system if I'm watching something where sound is especially important, but the built-in speakers here serve their purpose quite well and are amply adequate for routine use.
